As industrial automation technologies continue to proliferate in industries ranging from logistics and manufacturing to agriculture and automotive, vision systems are tasked with greater responsibility and increased demand. Whether used for inspection, product assembly or identification, traceability, or even automated checkout, machine vision is more prevalent than ever.

“We’ve seen machine vision move from inline modules on production lines into bigger spaces for bin picking large objects, palletizing operations, and other larger area solutions,” says Steve Kinney, director of training, compliance, and technical solutions at Smart Vision Lights. “With COVID and the massive rise in automated warehousing, machine vision became normal in even larger spaces and began to be networked to interlace into other tactical operations.”

“This kind of machine vision technology, coupled with the autonomous vehicle technology developed for the various mobile robots moving product within the warehouse, has now become attractive to many agricultural applications, and we see the beginnings of a potentially huge ‘smart farming’ market,” Kinney explains. “Machine vision will now move out and become normal in the largest space of all — the real world.”

How Robotics and AI are Reshaping Heavy Industry by Automating the Un-automatable

Heavy industry remains one of the last frontiers of automation. In an age of digital transformation, many of society’s foundational industries – shipbuilding, construction, offshore energy – remain predominantly analogue. These sectors form the physical backbone of our economies, yet their production methods are often manual, slow and difficult to scale or decarbonize.

Industrial AI Is More Than A Buzzword, So How Do We Make It Real?

A factory worker asks complex questions to his tablet and instantly gets the right answer, providing step-by-step instructions on how to solve the problem. Meanwhile, that same device continuously monitors its surroundings, providing contextual and situational data to predict bottlenecks, highlight inefficiencies, and even keep its human operator safe. That’s the power of AI, one of the foundations of Industry 4.0.

How AI and Robotics Can Help Prevent Breakdowns in Factories — and Save Manufacturers Big Bucks

A 2024 Siemens report estimated that unplanned downtime costs the world's 500 biggest companies up to $1.4 trillion a year combined. Breakdowns in machinery can then affect consumers through product shortages, higher prices, and lower-quality goods. Major companies like IBM and Amazon have long relied on a strategy known as predictive maintenance to try to keep their industrial operations running smoothly.
